That’s all there are. Ghost is simply a word that speaks of something immaterial. There’s no such thing as saying, “I’m a Christian, I have been given life from death by the power of the Holy Spirit, but I have no interest in fulfilling the law of God.” Wait a minute – that’s not possible. And so we read in verse 11: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”. When Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit, say in John 14:26 for example He uses the masculine personal pronoun when He says, "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit - the Father will send Him in My name - will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.". This is a major problem with many Christians; they are too filled with self and not filled enough with the Spirit of God. We all understand a lot about God, there’s an awful lot of emphasis on the attributes of God and the works of God. You will correctly understand Him and correctly understand Christ. You must be born of the Spirit, Jesus said in John 3 to Nicodemus. This is not a small thing. The Holy Spirit is so important to believer in that He will help us to understand the things that have been freely given to us in Christ. Father, we thank You for our time this morning. Others, when they think of God, think of Jesus, and everyone at one time or another has seen what some artist thinks Jesus must have looked like, but when someone mentions the Holy Spirit what comes to mind? Those are the unregenerate and the regenerate. Go to verse 5. And, by the way, something that doesn’t exist. This is a total transformation. Register. 2. The Holy Spirit is alive and active today in the lives of both believers and unbelievers. He’s not talking about losing his salvation because in the next line he says, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.” He hadn’t lost his salvation but he’d lost his joy. ?Did you get that? Please notice verse 4: “So that we now have life, which is possible because of the sacrifice of Christ on our behalf – in verse 3 – sin has then been condemned in the flesh of Christ who died as an offering for sin, so that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us.”. So the same amazing powerful work is done in inspiration that the Spirit of God is effecting in the life of the believer in whom He dwells as this is the word of the Spirit of God in the Scripture. There is a word for Spirit in the Old Testament, it’s ruach, a parallel in the New is pneuma. God is always about the business of speaking to His people. We don’t mind the things of the flesh, that’s not our mindset. That is a fact. It isn’t, as I’ve been saying to you, it isn’t just the fact that we have not as much a focus or concentration on the person of the Holy Spirit, though He is worthy of equal praise, it is that what is attributed to the Holy Spirit is certainly unworthy of His name. We see here the trouble God went to to help Cornelius get to the place he could experience salvation and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. What is the true work of the Holy Spirit? Now, because of the work of the Holy Spirit, you have been given life and the continuing, sanctifying work of the Spirit – talk about the regenerating work which happened when you’re saved – the ongoing sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit is an ongoing powerful movement of the third member of the Trinity in your life to drive you in the direction that He wants you to go. So here we have the second clue as to what constitutes preaching. And, as the third person of the Holy Trinity, He is a person. One writer says, “Yahweh’s ruach is the blast of God, the irresistible power by which He accomplishes His purposes, whether creative or destructive.” When you talk about the Spirit of God, you’re talking about a person who is essentially the expression of the violent power of God, divine energy, a power that is as great and as infinite and limitless as God Himself is great and limitless. He teaches truth to God's people as they seek to study and apply God's word to their lives. That is the work of regeneration. In the New Testament, that expands, that work of the Holy Spirit. In ancient Israel, the old covenant day, the Holy Spirit came upon kings and priests and prophets in a unique way. Not nonsense, this is the true work of the Holy Spirit.
